Our school has been successful in receiving a $20,000 grant from Schools Plus to fund an amazing project our year 5/6 classes. We have been funded for 2 years.
This is an exciting project which will teach our students many skills across the curriculum. Students and teachers will learn skills in documentary, film and animation.
This is a unique opportunity for our students to learn from a professional, award winning artist. The project will cultivate storytelling from a student’s perspective, incorporating many different components based on the theme of “See me, Hear me” which will include student driven topics such as friendships, school, sports, family, community, country etc...
The project will expose our year 5/6 students with another way of experiencing success at school. Students will learn these new skills in small groups and will further develop their friendships, creativity, confidence, collaboration and team work, as well as their critical and creative thinking skills.
It is particularly relevant during this time of Pandemic - being emotionally connected and being able to tell your story.
Our project which will run over two years and is headed by Paul Baks (Teacher Lead) and Greta Tucker (Musical Futures Australia Lead) Greta is an award winning documentary maker with many years of experience.
The school has purchased $6000 of fantastic professional cameras, lighting, sound and editing equipment for the project.
Our students will be learning about film and documentary making and also elements of animation.
This is an incredible opportunity for our students and another example of how our school is providing different experiences for students to achieve success and experience wonder and excitement at school.
We will be having a number of film festivals to celebrate and showcase these pieces. Some of our creations will be entered into film festivals. We will upload smaller films and videos created by students into our bellevuetube channel.

Our 'See Me, Hear Me' project has been an incredibly successful strategy and our students have produced some amazing animation and film pieces. Two of our projects, an animation and a film have recently been announced as finalists in the Australia/NZ wide A.T.O.M. awards (Australian Teachers Of Media)
The A.T.O.M. Awards have been celebrating the best of Australian and New Zealand screen content from the education sector and screen industry professionals since 1982)
Through funding support grants from 'Creative Victoria' and 'Schools Plus' and a partnership with Musical Futures Australia, a great Melbourne based company who share a passion for offering students broad experiences in the arts our program is now flying.
Each Wednesday one of our teachers Paul Baks and our media consultant Greta Tucker work with groups of yr 5/6 students to offer them another way to experience success in a creative way, not just focused on literacy and numeracy (although this program covers a lot of the curriculum.)
Our strategy engages students and gets them to share their thoughts, ideas and experiences and then workshop and refine these ideas to develop either a short documentary or animation concept and it takes off from there.
Students learn many skills in media and film/animation and develop confidence, empathy, teamwork, collaboration as well as the understanding that doing something worthwhile often takes a lot of thought, effort, and perseverance.
One of our pieces is an animation that captures the story of Maya, a Syrian refugee, and her journey to Australia and to our school.
Another is a documentary style piece which captures the thoughts, emotions and experiences of living through the Covid-19 pandemic through the eyes of our students.
The winners will be announced in February 2023. Check them out using this link below.
2022 Primary & Secondary Finalists - The ATOM Awards : The ATOM Awards
Congratulations to our students for their great creative pieces and to Greta and Paul for their fantastic efforts.
How cool is that!
