Nurturing all students - Nurturing the whole child
At Belle Vue Park Primary School we nurture our students in a variety of ways. Here are some examples of what you will see at our school.
Differentiation -
A teacher will be teaching a certain concept, but within the group student understanding of the concept varies so the teacher provides tasks at differing entry levels to accommodate point of understanding for each student.
Small groups -
For many tasks our teachers and/or students establish small learning groups where the students have the opportunity to interact and discuss what they are doing, and can learn with and from each other. Smaller groups also provides shy students with the confidence to speak and interact. Speaking in a whole class setting may be intimidating for some students. Small groups allows students to rotate through various associated activities or tasks.
Classroom helpers can supervise and assist students as well as the teacher. The teacher usually has a specific teaching group during some of the rotations.
Data use -
Our school uses formative assessment to pinpoint where each student is at. This allows our teachers to better target activities for each child. We have data boards in our teacher office spaces which are a visual record of where each student is in their literacy and numeracy learning. These help us to track progress every week.
Case Management approach -
Our teaching teams plan, deliver and assess together. We utilise a Case Management approach where the team is responsible for supporting each child, not just the class teacher. We utilise other staff to support Case Management where the skills and expertise of a combination of our team is utilised to support students.
Professional Learning Teams -
All staff contribute to our P.L.T.'s which are a platform where teachers meet to examine student data, discuss strategy and develop strategies to assist in learning
Student Learning Goals & Individual Learning Improvement Plans -
These focussed plans are developed to assist students in identifying a specific target/s for attention ina variety of curriculum areas. We use SMART goals which are Specific Measureable Achievable Realisitic &Timely
Social and Emotional wellbeing -
Our school utilises the skills of our Student Welfare officer who suppports children across a variety of areas including confidence, making and keeping friendships, supporting families, attendance and absenteeism, behavioural and emotional etc.
Student Welfare officer -
Our Student Welfare Officer supports students and families in many ways including the provision of psychological
counselling, developing and maintaining friendships, building confidence and resilience, attendance issues and providing links to community agencies, etc.
Our Student Welfare Officer works in a great setting - the Environmental Learning Precinct.
Respect Ambassador Program (R.A.P) -
The Respect Ambassador Program uses the mantra "Is it kind? Is it Safe? Is it Fair? All students are familiar with this concept and it works really well as it is simple for students to understand. Students can be selected as ambassadors and provided with information and training to assist other students in the playground.

Examples of previous partnershipsSisters & Brothers program
The program was a fantastic success for our 5/6 students culminating in a special performance at the end of term during Harmony Week and Celebration of Learning week.
The program featured a variety of talented artists and our students are involved in some fantastic activities (singing, mime, rap, guitar, beatbox etc.) which promoted and supported the strengths that cultural diversity offers our community. Each session ran for 90 minutes. We partnered with Arts Generator. The focus was on multi-cultural societies and tolerance. Students learned about social justice issues and how to be an active bystander. The Sisters & Brothers program adds another layer to our Respect Ambassador Program. Our school establishes many partnerships with outside agencies such as Arts Generator which provide students with a variety of engaging activities and experiences to support their learning. This is just one of them. By doing this we are engaging our students and it is paying dividends.... our "Attitudes to School" survey data is really high and above state levels which is fantastic. |
These photos above are of some of our students participating in coding and Robotics with secondary students from Essendon Keilor College.

Another successful initiative was the “Sisters & Brothers” program in years 3-6 which focussed on social skills and how to be an active bystander.
C.A.S.E.A. program is much sought after and takes a few years to become available.
C.A.S.E.A. is part of the Royal Children’s Hospital. The aim of the program is to promote pro-social behaviour, positive self-esteem, social skills, problem-solving skills, and assertiveness. The program ran over a semester and all staff received professional learning in the elements. Each week we delivered a classroom activity that focused on teaching students interpersonal, problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.
The C.A.S.E.A. activities were fun, practical, hands-on and child-focused. The children were taught in constructive and engaging ways to improve their capacity to regulate their behaviours and act appropriately, improve social relationships with others and develop their social problem solving skills.
The C.A.S.E.A. team of 3 clinical psychologists worked with individuals and small group sessions with parents and children. The program was fantastic and all students and parents benefited from their involvement. All our staff have received 2 days professional learning to implement the program.
