ORAL LANGUAGE - BAMBOO ROOM

Our school is fortunate to have an established and very well resourced oral language program. This program operates in the classrooms and also in a place which we call the Bamboo Room. Students from playgroup to middle primary school age have the opportunity to learn english in the Bamboo room as well as in their normal classroom. In the Bamboo room our students participate in many language rich activities and experiences. They explore, create and interact in a fun, stimulating environment where learning all aspects of english is the focus. Our students learn the appropriate way to socialise and interact, they learn to share, and take turns.  The Bamboo Room allows them to learn english through informal activities such as directed play, games, dress ups, music, role play, art etc. Students are also provided with formal lessons in reading, writing, speaking and listening. The We have two staff members who run our oral language classes from the Bamboo room. Enjoy these photos of the Bamboo Room.

VISUAL ARTS

Our students enjoy weekly participation in a fantastic visual arts program where they have the opportunity to create, explore various mediums and express themselves through art.

The program delivered by Fay provides skill development and an appreciation of art. A feature of the school and classrooms is the prevalence of student art pieces which are showcased and on display around the school. Enjoy the slideshow.

SCIENCE INQUIRY

Part of our philosophy celebrates curiosity. To that end our school offers a semester of Inquiry based Science investigations for every class. This allows students to develop an inquiring mind and to learn new things through observation and investigation. They learn about thinking logically, problem solving, they observe changes, they predict and make a hypothesis. Students experiment and test their hypothesis.

We have a well established relationship with G.T.A.C.  (Gene Therapy Access Centre) in Parkville  Each year we have staff from G.T.A.C. visit the school to deliver a series of science investigations for our senior classes. They bring lots of equipment and lead students through some amazing investigations...our students love it.

Over the past few years our students have done investigations on water molecules, genes and heredity factors. This was delivered in a series of experiments called the "Genetic lottery". This involved solving a gene inheritance problem in a fictional character to determine its characteristics. Students learned about the traits of organisms. They made mucus to learn the pathology of Cystic Fibrosis (CF), and they explored the inheritance of CF using gel electrophoresis.

MUSIC

Each semester our students participate in a weekly music session. Not only do the children learn beat, rhythm, basic notation etc. but they use a range of percussion instruments as well as guitars, xylophones, recorders, piano and assorted drums.  The children also use ipads to make their own music using a variety of apps. Music ROCKS!
