Inquiry Learning Planner   - Start Up Program ‘ Brain- ology’

 (Developing Growth Mindsets.)

The Big Idea:  “I Can learn anything because I was Born to Learn.”
In order to make the most of their minds, children need to have some knowledge of how the brain works and its part in learning to learn.
 
Start Up Program:  week 1-3
At the beginning of each year all classes/students are involved in developing a class mission and vision statement. This statement also contains class goal(s) and expectations for the year.
The Start Up Program helps students and their teacher to focus on their personal and class goals for the year and assists to set a very positive tone both in the classroom and out in the school grounds. By the end of week three it is planned that every student will take home (to their parents) a pamphlet or a written letter outlining the vision, mission and goals that they have developed in their class. A copy of each grade's pamphlet will also be available to view on the grade's blog.
Investigate classroom routines and expectations of learning.
 
Make these clear to students
Revisit the following over the 2 weeks eg behaviour expectations, consequences. School values of Honesty, Respect and Tolerance. Mantra fro RAP program Is I Kind is it safe is it Fair.
 
Rules and consequences
What makes a good student?
How do we learn in groups?
How do I make new friends?
How do I play nicely with my friends?
What makes a responsible kid, community kid
What are some of my favourite things to do?
How can you feel good about yourself?
Who is in my community?
How do I stay safe in my community?

A copy of each grade's pamphlet may also be available to view on the grade's blog or schools web site.

Need to cover 2 topics per week.
